Ayurvedic Summer Wellness

Staying Cool, Balanced, and Energized During the Warm Months

Although summer is coming to an end, the heavy temperatures and humidity remain. During this time,  our bodies naturally respond to the heat, intensity, and activity of summer. While this season often inspires adventure, movement, and time outdoors, too much heat can leave us feeling overheated or fatigued. According to Ayurveda, the ancient healing tradition rooted in Indian medicine, summer is a time to focus on cooling the body, calming the mind, and maintaining balance.

Summer in Ayurvedic Terms

Ayurveda recognizes summer as the season of Pitta dosha, which is associated with the elements of fire and water. Pitta controls our metabolism, digestion, and transformation, but when the heat of summer builds, it can become overworked.

The key to summer wellness is to invite in the opposite qualities: coolness, softness, hydration, and ease. By choosing cooling foods, slowing down when needed, and avoiding excess heat, you can stay balanced while enjoying everything the season has to offer.

What to Eat

During summer, your body craves lighter foods to help you stay cool. Light, fresh, and water-rich foods are easier to digest while helping replenish fluids and maintain energy.

Try these winter-friendly meal ideas:

  • Fresh seasonal fruits like watermelon, apples, berries, mangoes, and grapes

  • Crisp salads with cucumber, leafy greens, and fresh herbs

  • Sweet dairy products such as milk, cottage cheese yogurt, and ice cream

  • Cooling smoothies, yogurt bowls, or juices with fruit

    • Try our chia puddings or juices from Kind Juice Bar in-store!

  • Herbal teas with mint or fennel, coconut water

  • Cool or room temperature water, infused with mint or lime

Try limiting overly spicy foods, sour/unripe fruit, fried meals, excessive caffeine, and ice-cold drinks, as they can disrupt digestion or increase internal heat.

Mindful Routines

Summer invites us to embrace movement and connection while also remembering to slow down and recharge.

Hydrate Consistently

  • Sip water and cooling herbal teas throughout the day to support energy and digestion.

Exercise During Cooler Hours

  • Choose morning or evening walks, yoga, or other movements before the hottest part of the day.

  • Try our 9:30 am Vinyasa flow on Fridays! A great class to harnesses the cool, grounding energy of the early morning to beat the summer heat

Prioritize Rest

  • Listen to your body, take breaks when needed, and aim for consistent sleep to prevent burnout. Avoid a late bedtime to avoid an overstimulated mind.

These simple routines help balance the intensity of summer while supporting both physical and mental well-being.

Ayurveda recommends gentle rituals that help release excess heat while calming the nervous system.
